RESEARCH ASSOCIATES:

Development & Donor Relations Research Associate (NOW OPEN!)

Have you ever wondered how things really work? Just how do you "follow the money?" Join Bay Localize's Development Team as a Donor Relations Research Assistant and find out more! We're looking for an enthusiastic person (preferably a graduate student or someone with an interest in non-profit development, environmental issues, or investigative research) to join our growing organization. This unpaid position works with the Director of Strategic Partnerships to create biographical profiles, and learn the fine points of giving and relationship-building.

The ideal candidate will be passionate about community resilience and solutions to climate change and oil dependency. Primary responsibilities include:

  • Research and identify funding opportunities combining Internet research tools, the San Francisco Foundation Center's online directory and on-site library
  • Research 'best fit' funding opportunities based on the interests of donors and how these match with Bay Localize campaigns, as well as previous donation history
  • Research cross-sector listings (e.g, familiarity with Chronicle of Philanthropy; Grassroots Fundraising Journal and other dedicated development tools)
  • Assist with proposal drafts
  • Write a Recommendation Report based on findings

Qualifications:

  • Excellent organizational, communication, and writing skills
  • Good analytical abilities - proficient in basic Excel spreadsheet analysis; knowledge of Google docs helpful
  • Self-starter - need to be able to work with minimal supervision and feel comfortable asking questions when stuck
  • Attention to detail - need to be willing to check work several times, including formulas in spreadsheets and spelling errors in documents. Proofread and copyedit proposals.
  • Knowledge of issues relating to environmental justice and community resilience preferred
  • Enthusiastic attitude
  • Prefer a graduate student or non-profit professional with experience and interest in non-profit capacity building

Community Resilience Research Associate

Bay Localize seeks an experienced social science researcher to affiliate with and contribute to our Communities for Resilience program. The researcher will provide expertise, literature reviews, and peer review for the second edition of Bay Localize's popular Community Resilience Toolkit. The Toolkit is a grassroots organizer’s manual for strengthening their community’s ability to adapt to climate change, rising energy prices, and economic downturn. The Toolkit covers urban systems that provide food, water, energy, transportation, housing, jobs, and social services, as well as project planning tools for groups.

The first edition, released as a PDF in 2009, has been downloaded by local leaders in 46 of the 50 states and 30 countries. In response to this wide demand Bay Localize plans to publish and release an updated and strengthened second edition in 2012.

Qualifications:

  • Advanced degree in related field, for example Urban Planning, Natural Resources Management, Urban Sociology, Local Economic Development
  • Substantial research experience in climate adaptation and/or green jobs development
  • Excellent writing skills
  • Dedication to urban sustainability, social justice, and grassroots organizing
  • Access to databases of peer reviewed publications
  • Able to dedicate approximately 20 hours a month of volunteer time toward this project for at least six months

VOLUNTEERS:

Residential Energy Efficiency Project Volunteer

Looking for a way to use your real estate background to make a difference for the environment? Bay Localize and the Local Clean Energy Alliance seek a dedicated Project Volunteer to help build consensus toward effective residential energy efficiency policy in the East Bay. The Local Clean Energy Alliance is the Bay Area’s leading advocacy alliance on clean energy, networking over 87 member organizations including local environmental groups, green businesses, and community organizations. The volunteer will conduct outreach, communication, and coordination amongst leaders in local government and the real estate sectors around emerging local residential energy efficiency policies.

Qualifications:

  • Established East Bay resident
  • Professional background in local residential real estate transactions
  • Dedication to the environment and social justice
  • Strong interest in residential energy efficiency
  • Able to dedicate approximately 20 hours a month of volunteer time toward this project for at least six months
  • Excellent communication skills, enjoys working with people
  • Organized and comfortable working independently, while coordinating with the Local Clean Energy Alliance Steering Committee for overall direction

Scraps to Soil Project Volunteer

This volunteer will assist the Campaigns Director in forwarding the goals of the Scraps to Soil Project, an exciting new partnership between Bay Localize, Laney College, and a host of community partners, to boost campus composting of food scraps from the student cafeteria and bistro. The project will involve engaging with student leaders, staff, and faculty to raise awareness of the benefits of composting, to encourage greater use of campus composting systems, and divert organic waste from the landfill.

The ideal candidate will be passionate about community resilience and local action! Primary responsibilities include:

  • Organizing campus outreach events and classroom presentations
  • Developing project outreach materials (i.e., posters, fliers, and fact sheets)
  • Getting the word out on campus about art & multimedia design contest
  • Assisting with contest entry evaluation and coordinating the prominent placement of winning designs throughout campus
  • Assisting with coordination of Scraps to Soil Project team meetings

Qualifications:

  • Available 10 hours/week for a minimum of 3 months
  • Excellent organizational, communication, and writing skills
  • Self-starter - need to be able to work with minimal supervision and feel comfortable asking questions when stuck
  • Enthusiastic attitude
  • Knowledge of issues relating to composting, ecological justice, and community resilience preferred
  • Experience working with college-aged student populations preferred

State Energy Policy Project Volunteer

Passionate about state energy policy, and want to help others get involved? Bay Localize and the Local Clean Energy Alliance seek a dedicated Project Volunteer to organize regular conference calls and webinars to update local advocates on opportunities to influence state energy policy. The Local Clean Energy Alliance is the Bay Area’s leading advocacy alliance on clean energy, networking over 87 member organizations including local environmental groups, green businesses, and community organizations. The volunteer will identify critical opportunities to influence state energy policy, and organize educational conference calls or webinars on these topics with expert guest presenters.

Qualifications:

  • Well-versed in California state energy policies and politics, including current developments and opportunities
  • Able to communicate energy policy clearly in layperson’s terms
  • Dedication to the environment and social justice
  • Interested in organizing panels of experts to educate advocates
  • Able to dedicate approximately 20 hours a month of volunteer time toward this project for at least six months
  • Excellent communication skills, enjoys working with people
  • Organized and comfortable working independently, while coordinating with the Local Clean Energy Alliance steering committee for overall direction
