About Us
OUR MISSION:
We inspire and support Bay Area residents in building equitable, resilient communities. We confront the challenges of climate instability, rising energy costs, and recession by boosting our region's capacity to provide for everyone's needs, sustainably and equitably. We achieve this by equipping organizers, entrepreneurs, and civic leaders with flexible tools, models, and policies that strengthen their communities.
Why local? Why now?
Our growing dependence on declining fossil fuels coupled with mounting climate instability are converging to a crisis stage that imperils the viability of the Bay Area's economy and environment. To help prepare our region for the coming end of cheap oil — and the decline in imports that will follow — we're developing flexible tools and models that area groups and municipal governments can implement in their own communities to bring the production of food, water, energy, manufacturing, and essential goods and services closer to home.
Here at Bay Localize, we believe that vibrant local economies and healthy communities are the answer to our growing challenges. They are the best guard against global insecurity, an essential part of achieving social equity, and a vital way to enrich our day-to-day lives. We identify local opportunities, connect grassroots groups and policymakers, and advance projects that enhance regional self-reliance, sustainability, and equity. We are working to build a cooperative, inclusive movement toward regional self-reliance.
OUR GOAL:
To increase community livability and local resilience for all while decreasing fossil fuel use.
The following are Bay Localize's primary goals over the next 3-5 years:
- The principles of localization are broadly discussed and accepted as a strategy for achieving sustainability and equity throughout the Bay Area.
- Bay Localize serves as a clearinghouse of knowledge around localization strategies and practices.
- A diverse, multi-sectoral coalition advances localization at the local and regional levels throughout the nine-county Bay Area.
- Policies are enacted that improve vulnerable communities' access to local economic resources and enhance the local environment.
- Bay Localize's active team is comprised of people reflecting our region's diversity, including in positions of leadership.
